To make an application for your National Insurance Number you can use our quick and easy online application service. Once your application has been processed you will receive an email confirming the date, time and location to attend an evidence of identity interview which is usually 2 weeks after the processing of your application. After attending the identity interview or returning your application documents the estimated time for receiving your National Insurance Number is approximately 6-8 weeks. You must ensure that you provide your current address as this will be sent via the postal system. Please note if you have lost or misplaced your National Insurance Number or have changed your name you will not be required to attend an identity interview.
The interview will usually be one-on-one. However, an interpreter may be present if you have requested one.
When attending the evidence of identity interview you will be asked to prove your identity by bringing as many identity documents as you can. Some of which may include the following:
• National Identity card (UK or foreign)
• Valid Passport (UK or foreign)
• Full birth or adoption certificate
• Residence permit or residence card including biometric immigration residency documents
• Full marriage or civil partnership certificate
• Driving licence (UK or foreign)
If you do not have any of the above documentation you must still attend your interview as the documents you do have may be enough to prove your identity.
Once you have received your National Insurance number you will need to keep this safe.
