A National Insurance Number is provided by the government which consists of letters and numbers. This never changes whether you marry, change your name or move abroad. This number acts as your own unique number throughout of the whole of the social security system and ensures that your Tax and National Insurance contributions are only ever recorded against your name. The exact amount of National Insurance you pay depends on whether you’re employed of self employed and also how much you earn.
If you would like to work in England, Ireland, Scotland or Wales it will be mandatory to have a National Insurance Number and your employer will request to see this when you first start under their employment. The benefits of having a National Insurance Number are that you will not end up paying a higher rate of NI contributions or Tax, you will only pay the amount that you owe. There are many organisations that would require your National Insurance Number including your employer, HM Revenue and Customs and The Department for Work and Pensions.
Your National Insurance number should be kept safe and you should avoid giving this to anyone who does not need it to help prevent identity fraud.
When working in the UK it is law that you pay a certain amount of National Insurance and Tax to the government in relation to your circumstances and the amount you earn.
